What Have You Been Doing in the Dark?

task

FanDuel brought a metaphor:

When you do not know how much money you are earning or spending, it’s like shooting [hoops] in the dark.

Okay, that was a simile, but you get the idea.

The My Spend feature is clarity – A lights-on revelation for their users.

DOMO, with Director Jonathan Klein at the helm, led a production that balanced technical ingenuity with a strong narrative focus, ensuring the final film delivered FanDuel’s message with resonance, reflecting FanDuel's innovative and category-leading spirit.

process

Camera tests, supervised by Klein, confirmed that pairing infrared cameras with infrared lights would yield the sharp, detailed visuals necessary for the night vision concept. The team built custom MOVI rigs and discreetly mounted small infrared cameras on them, creating a unique platform that allowed a single operator to seamlessly capture both lit and unlit moments in the same take.

During pre-production, Klein cast real basketball players with diverse skill levels and personalities.

Klein elevated the location. Specifically, he framed the players with low to high angles to create a sense of heroism and lit them dramatically.

During pre-production, the team rehearsed to ensure smooth transitions between normal and night vision modes. With 6 cameras in play—including dolly and jib-mounted setups to augment the MOVI rigs —Klein captured the chaos and authentic reactions of the players during the blackout. The result is a visually dynamic sequence, equal parts harrowing and hilarious.

In post-production, Klein carefully calibrated the balance between the dramatic intensity of the blackout and the humor and relief of the "lights-on" moment.

One of his tricks was the layers of sound design. Listen for the amplified sneaker squeaks, buzzer cues, and the whirr of night vision. It’s an immersive auditory experience that puts you into the heart of the darkness before bringing you out with that satisfying swish at the end of the film.
